Keith Olbermann - Donald Rumsfeld On the Defensive

Clearly, Bush loves Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld, has screwed up royally, yet he still has the confidence of our President. Recently, while reading State of Denial by Bob Woodward, I came across an interesting assessment of Rumsfeld's character and job performance. The analysis, in the form of a three-line haiku, comes from Steve Rotkoff, Deputy Colonel for the team hunting WMD’s in Iraq.

Rumsfeld is a dick
Won’t flow the forces we need
We Will be too light. (State of Denial pg. 98)

Senator Levin: Postwar Findings and Prewar Assessments

If you don’t believe the Bush administration mislead the public in going to war, watch Senator Levin go through the Senate Select Intelligence Committee report titled, "Postwar Findings about Iraq's WMD Programs and Links to Terrorism and How They Compare with Prewar Assessments.” Levin, goes through the report, point-for-point, and debunks every justification given to invade Iraq. If you don't believe Senator Levin, read the report yourself. Here's a link to the de-classified portion of the 151 page report. Most of the report is still deemed classified.

A War of the Words Against George Bush By Tom Engelhardt

Apt quotes from some of the most eloquent Bush critics in our era -- from Howard Zinn to Barbara Ehrenreich. (Via Alternet)

Howard Zinn: "I came to the conclusion that, given the technology of modern warfare, war is inevitably a war against children, against civilians. When you look at the ratio of civilian to military dead, it changes from 50-50 in World War II to 80-20 in Vietnam, maybe as high as 90-10 today… When you face that fact, war is now always a war against civilians, and so against children. No political goal can justify it, and so the great challenge before the human race in our time is to solve the problems of tyranny and aggression, and do it without war."

Barbara Ehrenreich: "Today, we have this even larger federal government, more and more of it being war-related, surveillance-related. I mean it's gone beyond our wildest Clinton administration dreams. I think progressives can't just be seen as pro-big-government when big government has gotten so nasty. Katrina's a perfect example of how militarized the government has gotten even when it's supposedly trying to help people. The initial response of the government was a military one. When they finally got people down there, it was armed guards to protect the fancy stores and keep people in that convention center -- at gunpoint."

Daily Show with Jon Stewart - The Generals Did It

Commenting on Bush‘s reliance on his Generals, the Daily Show really hit the nail on the head. According to Bush, decision's pertaining to troop levels, resource allocation and day-to-day operations are the responsibility of his Generals. Bush, acts as if he shouldn’t be held accountable for their decisions or the decision making process. "See, it was the General who did it, not me."

State of Denial: Bob Woodward on Meet The Press

Bob Woodward, author of the best-selling State of Denial, appeared on Meet the Press this morning to talk to Timmeh about the book and the White House's reaction to it. Woodward shot down every talking point the administration has put out in an attempt to obfuscate his core message: that we are not being told the entire truth about the Iraq War. Colbert, the new cool | Bush and Borat? | Spare some change | U.S. = Narcissistic?

Want to Know What's Really Going on? Ask a Comic

Of course, satirists like Colbert, Dennis Miller, and Chris Rock have been plying their politically charged trade on cable networks like Comedy Central since the Clinton presidency, and the cynical irony for irony's sake that Letterman has trafficked in for decades has been on life support since George, Elaine, and Jerry Seinfeld waved farewell in 1998. Still, Letterman's clumsiness, not to mention Colbert's meteoric rise and accompanying self-assuredness, signals that political satire without a net is the new cool. (via Utne)

Borat a growing PR headache for Kazakhstan

Borat gives President Bush a reason to communicate with foreign leaders.

U.S. President George Bush is expected to meet the leader of Kazakhstan Friday to discuss a range of topics -- possibly including a public relations nightmare, caused by a fictional Kazakh reporter named Borat Sagdiyev. (via CTV)

American Narcissism and Iraq

You see, no matter what happens in Iraq, it's mostly about us -- spelled U.S.; the United States. We're encouraged to perceive that Iraq is most important, at least implicitly, because of what it means for the USA: its image in other countries, the deaths and wounds of its soldiers, the political strength of the president and, this fall, the likely effects on the midterm congressional elections. Economists’ statement supporting an increase in the minimum wage

In the, ain't-that-obvious department, leading economists are calling for an increase in the, stuck-in-the-mud, minimum wage. You see, when the minimum wage isn’t increased, and prices for goods keep rising, people become poor, through no fault of their own.

The minimum wage has been an important part of our nation’s economy for 68 years. It is based on the principle of valuing work by establishing an hourly wage floor beneath which employers cannot pay their workers. In so doing, the minimum wage helps to equalize the imbalance in bargaining power that low-wage workers face in the labor market. The minimum wage is also an important tool in fighting poverty. The U.S. vs. John Lennon

Usvsjohnlennon

The story traces John Lennon's life from the period 1966 to 1976, where Lennon transforms into an antiwar activist, one in constant conflict with the U.S. government and its views. (Via Yahoo Movies)

The U.S. vs. John Lennon offers up the singer's famous, filmed confrontation with the ludicrously snotty New York Times writer Gloria Emerson, who calls Lennon "dear boy" as he heatedly attempts to defend the role of the artist in political discourse. No devious editing required here: Although Lennon seems to lose his composure in the encounter, Emerson looks an utter clown all on her own. (via LA Weekly)

Today everyone agrees that cooperation between the CIA and FBI is a key to preventing future terrorist attacks. But what if CIA-FBI intelligence sharing isn't about terrorist threats? What if the CIA is telling the FBI about people who criticize the president and speak out against an unpopular war?

That's precisely what we found in the John Lennon FBI files, released in 1997 under the Freedom of Information Act. That took 15 years of litigation that went all the way to the Supreme Court (I was the plaintiff, represented by the ACLU of Southern California). Those files were assembled in 1972 when Lennon was living in New York City, campaigning against the Vietnam War, and Nixon was in the White House, trying to deport him – that story is told in the documentary “The US vs. John Lennon,” which opened nationwide Sept. 29 (view the trailer here). Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Foley Fiasco

The Daily Show is having a lot fun with the Foley fiasco. Congressman, Mark Foley (R-FL) sent naughty emails to his male, underage, page. Apparently, a senator can’t do that...
