Whatever you do, please do not call Asobi Seksu shoe-gazers. I loath the term and all its connotations. I'm gonna’ go with their bio, which labels their music "dream pop." Dream Pop, which is an apt word to describe Citrus, their new album. Asobi Seksu shot down the shoe-gazer label by playing tasty nuggets of dream pop all night long enraptruing the Bowery Ballroom audience. Songs such as Thursday and Strawberries were dripping with pop goodness and had the crowd bopping along.
The only down side to their set was the technical difficulties, which are a rarity for the Bowery Ballroom. At the start of the set the guitars were so loud I couldn't hear any of the vocals. Then there were technical difficulties in the middle of the set, which caused a five minute delay. After the delay Yuki Chikudate vocals came in loud and clear and the mix was perfect. Her voice is so gentle and soft, yet it's able to fight with and stand on top of all the feedback and buzz generated by James Hanna's guitar. It makes for an interesting sound that impresses and engages live.
Unfortunately, I had to miss Serena Maneesh's set because it was passed the Angry Citizen's bed time. But never fear, Maneesh will be playing @ Warsaw in October with Brooklyn favs Dirty On Purpose. Tickets here.
